so WHAT do I do with my showreel?

After months and months of waiting - now that I have my showreel completed - what do I do with it?

I am sending it out to all personal contacts first, friends, and friends of friends and so on.

But what really happens? It is quite a basic reel - nothing exciting or masterfully executed. But it demonstrates ability to direct.

Every cunt has to start somewhere - so what about me?

I have a list of production companies in London. It looks like there is cold calling to do.

Good luck. Can I see your showreel thingy? Not that I can help you with a job or anything. You can see my thesis is return, its 70000 words of joy!

Directing is SUCH a hard thing to get into. I've worked with about a dozen talented TV directors. Unfortunately, there's no way to become a director straight away. Executive producers will only hire a director if they have prior experience of having directed commercially viable programmes. So most people who have some directing skill end up starting as runners or researchers and moving their way up to becoming assistant producers or assistant directors before becoming fully fledged directors.

Unfortunately it's no good if you're skilled at directing. The people who hire directors don't want skill - they want a track record of having worked on stuff they've heard of.

If you're willing to start in the industry, I'm afraid cold calling does work. Go around places with a high congregation of production companies like in Soho with your CV. Knock on doors and visit them in person. And try writing to directors and producers of stuff that you thought was good - have a view and a perspective rather than just sending them a boring CV.

Good luck!

Oh, and here's my show reel:
